As an adult, I found myself wrestling with a storm of hidden and unprocessed emotions. But the roots of my struggle reached back to when I was the quintessential "Golden Child."
Growing up, I ticked all the boxes that society, and especially the adults in my life, had set. I excelled in school, respected my teachers, maintained a polite demeanor, and always aimed to please. In return, I reveled in their admiration. My young mind equated conformity and achievement with worthiness.
This dance of approval and reward defined my childhood. "Be obedient, strive for the best grades, respect authority, embody the ideal child... And in turn, receive love."
My internal compass, my intuitive voice, my ability to rely on myself, and build genuine self-esteem... all remained stunted and undeveloped. I had transformed into an emotionally exhausted perfectionist, addicted to the high of external approval and validation, with my self-soothing and affirming abilities almost non-existent.
The picture-perfect life I'd crafted left me puzzled and devastated. “Why, after achieving so much, do I feel like this?”
Then came the self-reproach, the guilt, the shame.
"Such ingratitude! Can't you see how fortunate you are? There are countless others who would dream to be in your shoes."
I felt cornered, imprisoned by my own mind, tormented by my thoughts.
The journey towards self-liberation started with a deep dive into my core beliefs, where I unearthed the disempowering ideas that held me captive: "My worth is tied to my achievements."
"Anything less than perfect is a failure."
"I’m deserving only when I excel."
"I’m only appreciated when others applaud my performance."
How could this be? I was fortunate to have loving and supportive parents. Where did these harmful beliefs stem from?
The truth is, irrespective of the love and care my parents showered on me or their best intentions, my interpretation of these experiences was what truly mattered. Unfortunately, I had never been taught to think positively, to navigate my emotions, to empower myself.
My transformation began with reprogramming my beliefs, swapping the disempowering ones for empowering thoughts. As I altered my thinking, I witnessed a dramatic shift in my life.
This journey sparked a realization: "Had someone guided me as a child, I could have been spared years of pain!"
Thus, my mission was born.
Teaming up with my sister, we authored My Affirmations Writing Books, a series aimed at instilling positive self-talk and nurturing self-esteem in children from a young age. I had the honor of conducting workshops in elementary schools, introducing children to the concepts of mental health and the potential of their own minds.
Now, my purpose is to equip parents with the knowledge and tools they need to enhance their child's emotional intelligence, teach them empowering thought patterns, and lay the groundwork for long-term mental health.
